Talking Operations Seminars

Sponsored by the National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC)

Come learn about the latest trends and challenges in Transportation Management & Operations (M&O) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

The members of the National Transportation Operations Coalition (NTOC), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Operations, is sponsoring “Talking Operations,” a series of monthly seminars via the telephone and Internet designed to introduce and educate stakeholders on current trends, tools, and noteworthy practices in Transportation Management and Operations (M&O) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This series is part of a larger outreach initiative by the NTOC aimed at providing technical assistance, training, tools, and information that will help transportation practitioners, decision makers, and the general public meet the transportation challenges of tomorrow by understanding the benefits M&O and ITS can provide for transportation systems today!

The “Talking Operations” seminars will be held on a monthly basis throughout the year and are open to both the public and private sectors. The schedule of seminars and registration information can be found on the reverse or by visiting http://talkingoperations.webex.com. If you have questions, please call or email Jennifer Seplow, SAIC, at 703-676-6849, Jennifer.E.Seplow@saic.com.

Why dial in?

With limited travel budgets and busy work schedules, it has become increasingly more difficult for practitioners and decision makers to obtain the information needed to understand the current state-of-practice and continue to provide services that are efficient and effective. These seminars provide a convenient way for practitioners to broaden their knowledgebase and develop new skills to help them do their jobs better and make more informed decisions, all at no cost to participate. The scheduled topics were chosen based on the input from the transportation operations community and reflect current industry issues. For 2004/2005, the NTOC has identified many topics and speakers outside the traditional public transportation development process, and this includes the perspectives of state, local and regional practitioners, the research and educational community, and representatives from many professional associations. As an added benefit, following each seminar participants will have the opportunity to register for the Talking Operations Forum and subscribe to the ITS/Operations newsletter, which serve as on-going resources for obtaining and sharing information among peers. The Talking Operations Forum and newsletter subscription will be available on the NTOC website at www.ntoctalks.com beginning October 2004.

Participation is limited to the first 100 registrants; therefore, it is advised that multiple participants from a single agency/organization make arrangements to participate from one location (e.g. a conference room or meeting facility) allowing us to maximize participation.

How it works

The seminars are interactive and are held via teleconference and the Internet. To participate, a telephone and a 56K Internet connection are needed. This format allows for extensive participation of transportation operations stakeholders from across the country. Each seminar will last 90 minutes, with 60 minutes allocated for the presentations, and 30 minutes for participant question and answer. Through the use of web conferencing, participants will be able to view the speaker’s presentation on their personal computer while listening to the audio portion of the presentation by dialing into the assigned teleconference number.

The “Talking Operations” website provides details about each of the scheduled seminars and how to register. The website is also used for logging on to each seminar, interacting with the speakers and other participants, and providing feedback. Each seminar will be recorded and archived on the “Talking Operations” website as well. Once participants register for a seminar, an email will be sent to the registrant providing login instructions and the teleconference dial in number.

We look forward to your participation and hope that you will find the “Talking Operations” seminars to be valuable resources for your professional development needs.
